 Puffing on electronic cigarettes is already a no-no on flights.The Department of Transportation is proposing to explicitly ban the use of the devices on planes.

“Airline passengers have rights, and this new rule would enhance passenger comfort and reduce any confusion surrounding the use of electronic cigarettes in flight,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Electronic cigarettes look like the real thing, but they’re actually battery-operated devices that turn nicotine into a vapor that is inhaled by the user, according to the FDA.

Regarding the Regulation Of Electronic Cigarettes

On April 25, 2011, FDA ( U.S. Food and Drug Administration )released a "letter to stakeholders" regarding the regulation of electronic cigarettes  wherein FDA announced that it would no longer try in vain to regulate electronic cigarettes as "drugs" or "devices" so long as such products are not marketed for "therapeutic purposes." Electronic Cigarette will be regulated as a tobacco product, now it is  legal to use in US and no longer banned for importation. Also the new concern is that eCig (electronic cigarette) is not the same as tobacco product and should be regulated as a product lesser in health risks than regular tobacco cigarettes.
